News and Announcements
Daniel and I sending along this article from our local paper- thought it might be interesting to share at your reunion in August? We would also like to forward several more articles that will be printed in the next few days, one from the Boston Globe and the other one from the town of Hanover, Ma. August 9th 2012, is the 70th Anniversary of the sinking of the USS Quincy CA-39. The City of Quincy, MA. will celebrate the anniversary with a Navel Contingent, with a flag raising and the singing of the National Anthem, a wreath ceremony and prayer, and Daniel reading the names of his Shipmates that were killed in Action August 9. 1942 during the Battle of SAVO Island .

Hanover's Galvin to recognize soldiers last at Battle of Guadalcanal
I just want to let you and the GCV folks know my team will be working in Guadalcanal during the 70th. We have lobbied very hard to get the Department of the Navy to dispatch a grey hull ship to Iron Bottom Sound for the observance.
Too many years have gone by since there has been an official Navy presence there for August 7th. I am attaching a copy of the letter I received informing us there would be a ship in attendance. The ship is the USS Sampson DDG-102 based in my home town of San Diego.
On August 7th there will be a service at the War Memorial and then we will hold a service on board ship to honor the Sailors, like my mother's brother, on the morning of August 9th. On the 8th we will have a commemorative baseball game.
